Best Vegan Maki Rolls for at Home

Though the idea of rolling sushi at home may seem daunting, it is far easier than it may first appear. With just a bit of practice, any amateur can easily prepare these gorgeous, deceptively simple little snacks!

To start, roll out a sushi mat. Though not entirely necessary, we advise adding a layer of cling wrap over the mat to make cleanup even easier.

Lay down your seaweed. Then, using damp fingers, gently glaze it was a very slight layer of water. Scoop a spoonful of seasoned sushi rice over the surface and spread it evenly, leaving just a bit of room on the outside edges.

After filling the rice with your desired ingredients, simply roll up the vegan maki roll, and gently squeeze the outside of your sushi mat until all the ingredients have been firmly pressed together. A small amount of water on the outside seal of the roll should help it further stay together even after it has been released.

Voila! From here, all that remains is to cut up your maki rolls to the desired size, arrange them on a plate, and enjoy the finished product.

These maki rolls are easy to personalize, but as a start, enjoy experimenting with any of these three basic recipes.

Breakfast Maki

This simple breakfast maki is a great American twist on the classic Japanese fare.

To create, simply scramble up some vegan eggs or tofu with your usual favorite seasonings. Allow them to cool, and then drape them over the rice bed of your maki.

Add a few thin slices of avocado, diced cherry tomatoes, and a sprinkle of “everything bagel” seasonings to prepare this delicious, on-the-go breakfast alternative! Save yourself from the unhealthy fast-food breakfast by making this treat the night before and enjoying it on your commute to work.

Cucumber Maki

Fresh, creamy, and oh-so-refreshing, this cucumber maki is the perfect addition to a stressful day.

To fill your maki roll, start by peeling and cutting a cucumber into long, thin strips. We recommend removing the seeds for a more consistent texture. Apply a similar treatment to your favorite vegan cream cheese; to make this process less sticky and messy, place the cream cheese in the freezer for about fifteen minutes beforehand and keep a bowl of warm water handy to wash your paring knife.

It’s that simple! The combination of the rich texture and light, refreshing flavor is all you need to make this memorable, vegan take on the classic cucumber roll.

Marinated Beet Sushi

This creative twist might take a bit more preparation, but the result is well worth the effort.

To start, peel and cut your beets into long, even strips. Roast them at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until they are soft all the way through.

Place them in a bowl and cover them with a mixture of soy sauce, powdered ginger, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil. Allow them to marinate for as long as desired to achieve the potency you want. We suggest between 20 and 40 minutes.

Once the beets have cooled and marinated, it’s time to assemble your roll!

Place cucumber, marinated beets, and avocado in the bed of your maki roll and finish preparing as usual. Enjoy adding this seasoned, flavorful take to your new list of favorites.
