Vegan Alternatives to Easter Eggs

Regardless of how you take your eggs– chocolate or ready-to-dye– you can look forward to a very vegan Easter with any of these delectable options!

Easter Egg Recipe

Cocoa beans are not an animal by-product, it’s the other added ingredients in chocolate that make it a poor option for vegans. However, there are plenty of vegan dark chocolate options! By simply grabbing some cruelty-free vegan chocolate and an egg-shaped mold, then melting chocolate and covering the mold in a thin coat, you can quickly have cruelty-free Easter eggs. However, this requires tempering, which is a tricky art many chocolatiers spend years mastering.

There are plenty of vegan chocolate eggs online ready to be ordered for your enjoyment. But if you feel like making your own, we recommend this fun egg shaped recipe! This recipe uses a white chocolate shell with a decadent almond butter center.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond butter

2-5 tbsp of your favorite syrup

1 cup almond flour or 1/4 of coconut flour

    1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 7 tbsp of cacao butter

1/4 cup cashew or coconut butter

    1/2 cup of powdered sugar

    Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Add your favorite syrup to almond butter and combine into a paste. We recommend tasting to ensure you have the amount of syrup you desire, but keep in mind if you are using coconut flour, add a little less syrup as this is a sweet flour that will add to the sugary flavor.
  2. Grab your almond or coconut flour. Thicken the almond butter mix until it rolls into balls. We recommend tasting again to ensure the balance is correct.
  3. Roll the balls into egg-shaped cookies and place them on parchment paper. Transfer this to the freezer.
  4. Carefully melt the cocoa butter in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds at a time, or in a double boiler (in a bowl on top of a pot of water on the stove). Do not allow water droplets to get into the bowl of chocolate.
  5. Add the cashew or coconut butter and mix. Lastly, add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  6. Take the almond eggs out of the freezer and ensure they are cold and firm. Then dip them into the chocolate mix.
  7. Finally, place all the eggs in the freezer until the chocolate sets and enjoy!

Easter Egg Decorator Kit

For many kids and adults alike, the best part of Easter isn’t finding or eating their eggs; it’s dying them. This year, don’t miss out on any of the excitement. The main thing to understand about dye for eggs is that some household paints and food coloring contain animal by-products such as casein. This is a protein in milk, shellac from the female lax bug and ox gall from cows. To be on the safe side, grab yourself some white plastic eggs and create your own dye!

  • 2 cups of water
    3/4 cups vinegar
    1 tsp beet powder
  • 1/8 tsp ground turmeric
    1/4 cup frozen blueberries
    1/8 teaspoon baking soda

Red Dye

Boil half a cup of water and remove from the stove before adding beet powder. Once this is dissolved, add to 1/4 of vinegar.

Yellow Dye

Boil half a cup of water and remove from heat before adding turmeric. Allow to dissolve, this may take some time. Add this to 1/4 cup of vinegar.

Purple Dye

Boil half a cup of water and whilst on the heat add the blueberries, then allow them to burst. Mix well, before straining the blueberries from the mix. Add baking soda to the colored water. Then take the mixture and pour it into 1/4 cup of vinegar.
